My Dacre Build


Dacre is a 16mm scale live steam locomotive originally conceived by Peter Jones and described in his book "Building Small Steam Locomotives", this design was based on using Roundhouse components.  This concept was developed further by the late David Summerfield and Erik-Jan Stroetinga as a home build project making every part as far as possible and this is the path I have chosen.


I will, as far as possible keep the blog up to date, but I am known for being absorbed in a project and not keeping up my blogs as thoroughly as I should so I apologise in advance and ask you to bear with me.

Gas Burner Update I have now completed the gas burner having made the support bracket and silver soldered it into the fabrication. I tried making a support similar to the cast one used by Roundhouse which incorporates a boiler support.  That one didn't work out well as the materials I used were too thick so I made a simple bracket for the final version and a separate boiler support bracket Burner Mounted Into It's Bracket ready for assembly and gas connection Fabricated Boiler Bracket Mounted on the Footplate

Progress As of August 2018 most of the major parts have been completed, these include: Frames and Running Gear; Cylinders; Valves and Valve Gear; Footplate; Smokebox; Cab and Tanks; Bunker; and Gas Burner. Locomotive as of August 2018 The main jobs now: Attach main components to footplate; Gas Tank; Fitting of Displacement Lubricator; Pipework; Assembling Connecting and Coupling Rods: Valve Timing; Consideration of radio control; Etc - (all I have probably forgotten). Update: Of course I forgot the trifling matter of painting let alone valve setting.  Doh!

Gas burner

The top row Left to Right are: Gland screw, Gas jet holder, Air regulator sleeve Main body, ad  Gas tube end cap. Parts as Made for Gas Burner Before Assembly For the actual gas jet I obtained a commercially made one as I didn't fancy drilling a hole as small as 0.15 mm (0.06 inch) on the equipment I have.  It would probably cost me more in materials and broken drills than the commercial one. I constructed the gas burner as per the drawing derived from the CAD set I found on the internet. The first items I made were the body, air regulator and gas jet holder.   These were relatively simple turning jobs on the lathe.  The cross holes in the main body were drilled on my milling machine using a rotary table mounted vertically with a 3 jaw chuck to hold the work.  Unfortunately I
